Chapter 10

Trina leaned against the wall in the back of the room watching Rachel encourage each of the girls with their painting. Rachel was putting more energy into this than Trina had ever expected her to.

For a lot of people the thought of working with children is fun — at first. Then the reality of how demanding they can be sets in and they flee for the hills. But Rachel seemed like she was enjoying every minute of this.

“Looks like our new art director is working out pretty well,” Connie whispered as she eased up beside Trina. She needed to get a bell for that woman the way she could just appear from out of no where.

“Huh, yeah. Sure. She’s working out — for now.”

Trina felt Connie watching her from the corner of her eye, but she wouldn’t turn to face her.

“Well, the girls seem to like her a lot and I think she likes them too.”

Just then one of the girls, Trina couldn’t remember her name yet, somehow managed to spill an entire jar of red paint on her shoes. Tears began to form in her eyes and Trina was just about to rush in to rescue her when Rachel exploded into a fit of laughter.

“Wow, Tracy! Now you’ve got ruby red slippers like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz!”

Rachel’s light hearted reaction stopped Tracy, from crying immediately and she too started giggling uncontrollably.

“You’re going to have to keep those shoes. They’re magical now. Whenever you click your heels together they might just transport you back to Bright Horizons.”

“Oooo! I want some magic shoes too!" Grace yelled out. She was just about to take her paint brush to her shoes when Rachel snatched it out of her hand.

“Hold on just a minute Rembrandt!” Rachel looked around the room with a smile, waving the confiscated paint brush. “Don’t anyone else get any ideas about painting their shoes. I’m not going to get in trouble with the camp director because all of you ruined your good sneakers.”

Rachel looked over at Trina and winked.

Trina felt her heart flutter.

“Miss Trina wouldn’t get mad at you,” Tracy corrected. “She likes you. Don’t you Miss Trina. Don’t you like Miss Rachel too much to get mad at her.”

Trina stared into the little girls eyes and then glanced awkwardly at Rachel.

“Uh. Yeah. Of course I like Miss Rachel.” Trina felt her face getting hot. “I mean. I like everyone here. But that doesn’t mean I want the whole camp running around with paint on their shoes.”

“Okay, Ladies. Enough of that. Let’s move on with our lesson.”

The girls turned their attention back to Rachel and Trina started to breathe again.

“Out of the mouths of babes,” Connie whispered and looked up at the ceiling.

“What are you talking about, Connie?”

“Oh, please. Don’t play dumb with me. I’ve seen the way you look at her. You like her — as more than a co-worker. The sooner you admit that to yourself — the better off you’ll be.”

Trina turned and looked directly at Connie.
